Legal settlement includes arbitration and court, while diplomatic settlement includes negotiation, investigation, good offices, mediation and conciliation.  The Nicaragua case was a case handled by the International Court in 1986. The case began with an internal problem in Nicaragua, then the United States intervened and was actively involved in the case.
